CEI CamBio creates infoadapted positions for the dissabled in member institutions

The Campus de Excelencia Internacional de Medio Ambiente, Biodiversidad y Cambio Global (CEI CamBio) has created infoadapted positions in the computer rooms and libraries of all member institutions – universities Pablo de Olavide (Seville), Internacional de Andalucía, Almería, Cádiz, Córdoba, Huelva, Jaén and the CSIC. The aim of this initiative is to make university environments universally accessible, following the agreement signed byCEI CamBio, Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deportes and Fundación ONCE.

After a thorough assessment process, carried out by Fundación ONCE, established an action protocol and the needs to be met, CEI CamBio has created a number of points to facilitate access to persons with visual and motor impairments, including specialised furniture, hardware and software.

Following the 2011 call concerning the adaptation of university environments to universal accessibility criteria – within the framework of the programme Campus de Excelencia Internacional, Subprograma de Fortalecimiento (modalidad de Colaboración Público-Privada) – CEI CamBio has taken important steps to advance the social inclusion of the disabled in their IT classrooms and libraries.

The implementation of the project has included de acquisition of especially designed Standard keyboard (equipped with Expert Mouse Kensington). Adapted for persons who need to keep their hand firmly supported for extra control, and those suffering from intention tremors; Voice recognition software; Gripper arm and wide rectangular surface; mouse emulator; Microphone and headphones; Text adaptor for the transcription of texts into Braille script; Screen magnifier; magnifier; Ergonomic desk, and Text-recognition software that reads texts in printed format captured by a scanner or by a specific camera, and converts them into other text or audio format.

CEI CamBio is a project focused in development and research around global change and its ecological and socioeconomic impact, with the participation of the universities of Almeria, Cadiz, Cordoba, Huelva, Internacional de Andalucia, Jaen and the CSIC, under the coordination of Universidad Pablo de Olavide. This coalition of Andalusian knowledge aims at becoming an international reference in the environment, biodiversity and global change related studies, by combining Andalusia’s unique conditions for the analysis of ecosystems and the input of the Andalusian prestigious scientific community.
