The Center for Foreign Students at Pablo de Olavide University will offer two 3 week Hispanic Studies sessions in the summer of 2010. The program will include Spanish language classes at three levels as well as a variety of courses in both Spanish and English.

Optional class: Andalusian Culture

Credit hours: Each course is 6 ECTS credits (3 U.S. credit hours) except the SPAN 316 Andalusian culture class that is 2 ECTS credits (1 U.S. credit). Classes will be held Monday through Thursday with required course-related activities on Fridays. Transcripts will be issued by Pablo de Olavide University.

Housing: Housing options include a homestay with a Spanish family with all meals and laundry services included (475 € from May 30th to June 19 or from June 19 to July 11th) or the oncampus student residence hall (www.campuspatrimonial.es).

Program Cost: 450 euros (600€ with optional one credit Andalusian Culture class)

Included: 1 intensive class, transcript from Pablo de Olavide University, social-cultural activites (note: the fee for the optional "Andalusian Culture" class is 150 euros).

Scholarships: 1-3 partial tuition scholarships of 200-400 euros each will be available for students from the European Union with an excellent academic record. Preference will be given to residents of the new member states (Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Cyprus, Malta, Romania and Bulgary).

Optional Class:
SPAN 316 Andalusian Culture (1 credit): Andalusia is a region which has been home to different peoples and civilizations and which, over time, has formed a unique cultural identity. Andalusia has produced famous philosophers, painters, politicians, writers and poets. The objective of this class is to give a vision of Andalusian society and especially its landscape, history, economy, cities and people. Concerning its cultural heritage, special reference will be made to its gastronomy, fiestas, art and music. All these aspects are crucial in understanding current Andalusian society and culture. This course meets one hour daily (15 contact hours total) and is only offered in the summer. Conducted in Spanish.

  • ART 323 History of Spanish Art: From the Renaissance to the 20th Century
    Program

    A survey of major works of art from the Renaissance period through
    the 20th century. Painting, sculpture and architecture are examined
    in the context of their time and place in history. Special attention is
    given to the art and culture of Seville. Conducted in Spanish.
  • ART 330 History of Spanish Cinema during the Democracy Program
    Spanish cinema undergoes an important transformation following the
    death of Franco in 1975 and the ensuing democracy. During these
    last 30 years, Spanish cinema has become a stronger player on the
    European scene and has gained recognition which was unthinkable
    only a few decades ago. This course will analyze the historical
    evolution of this period as well as introduce the student to
    Spanish films up to the present time. Conducted in Spanish.
  • BUS 325E International Marketing (in English) Program
    An introduction to international marketing. Topics include
    analytical techniques used in international market research,
    determining prices and distribution channels in an international
    context, marketing across linguistic and cultural borders.

  • ECON/POL 321 The European Union (in English) Program
    The course will analyze the initial motives behind the creation of
    the European Community and its subsequent development into the
    European Union with a unique institutional structure. There will
    be a study of the EU's key common policies - Economic and Monetary
    Union, Competition, Agriculture, External Trade etc - and their
    global effects; paying special attention to EU-US relations.

  • SPAN 102 Elementary Spanish Program
    This beginning course is designed for students with basic Spanish
    knowledge. Emphasis is on building oral and written communication
    skills and on acquiring knowledge of the Spanish speaking world.
    Conducted in Spanish.

  • SPAN 201 Intermediate Spanish Program
    This course is designed for students who have had two semesters of
    university-level Spanish. Emphasis is on expanding vocabulary and
    building oral and written communication skills as well as
    acquiring a greater awareness of the Spanish-speaking world.
    Conducted in Spanish.

  • SPAN 311 Advanced Spanish I Program
    This course is designed for students who have had 3 semesters of
    university-level Spanish. Emphasis is on applying the skills
    acquired at the elementary and intermediate levels to further
    improve oral and written skills. The methodology applied is
    communicative and encompasses assignments which include grammar
    reviews, cultural readings on Spain and debates which require use
    of practical and communicative vocabulary. Conducted in Spanish.

  • SPAN 351 Advanced Spanish II Program
    This course is designed for students who have had 4 or more
    semesters of university-level Spanish. The course focuses on
    written and oral expression of Spanish through compositions, oral
    reports and class discussions. Material for discussion includes
    literary texts as well as topics of general interest. Emphasis is
    on interactive language use, vocabulary expansion, and accuracy of
    expression. Conducted in Spanish. (NOT OFFERED IN SUMMER 2010)

  • SPAN 376 Spanish for Business Program
    In this course, students learn the vocabulary and concepts used in
    oral and written transactions in the business world. Emphasis is
    placed on increasing vocabulary and using Spanish business
    terminology in commercial correspondence including letters, job
    descriptions, advertisements, bank documents, etc. Cultural
    differences which affect the way business is conducted in Spain
    and in other countries will also be briefly explored. Conducted in
    Spanish
