Created by law 3/1997 of the Andalusian parliament (BOJA 76, 3 July & BOE 180, 29 July), the Pablo de Olavide University of Seville was formed as an institution of higher learning and through staff, study and research would contribute to the education of men and women of tomorrow. As an instrument of social change that directs and contributes to economic development and the cultural and scientific progress of Andalusia, the Pablo de Olavide University fully integrates itself with the public universities of Andalusia, according to the Law of Coordination of the Andalusian University System. Its academic structure and organisation allows it to respond to scientific, technical and cultural challenges and offer appropriate solutions from quality teaching staff and researchers. The development of new technologies; the configuration of teaching from the design of study plans; attention to the forefront of research; development of post graduate courses openness to international cooperation; and a participative and dynamic organisation; all contribute to the makings of a unique university that changes with contemporary society. The university aims to provide high quality scientific training to all students using the best tools but at the same time not forgetting the human aspect of the 21st century, the global village and our place in it. In this manner the Pablo de Olavide University offers a permanent forum for debate and reflection on the challenges of contemporary society, culture, globalisation, defence and promotion of human rights, mass communication, environmental issues etc through conferences, discussions, exhibitions, publications, workshops and many other outlets. The university also takes special interest in sporting activities, which is shown in the remodelling and expansion of current facilities in response to the needs of the students. Facilities are spread over three areas and cater to most sports including football, basketball, handball, tennis, athletics, swimming, cycling and hockey, just to name a few. The sports complex and facilities aim to not only provide the means of relaxation and exercise for students but also offer the means by which students can prepare for and take part in competition. Concerns for the problems of our time within the framework of international solidarity and cooperation forms part of the ideals of the institution. In the same way Pablo de Olavide, a Peruvian- Andalusian of the 18th century is an appropriate symbol for the university. An educated man, valuing the progress of both men and women, development and reform, exemplifies the spirit of looking towards the future that is also held by the university. As the university is fully integrated into the European University system it is now turning its attention to Latin America and developing inter-university relations. We are particularly interested in strengthening our links with developing countries and fully collaborate with their progress. The Pablo de Olavide University opens Seville and Andalusia to Europe
and Latin America. |
