Le élites italiane e la monarchia ispanica (secoli XVI-XVII): servizio, mobilità e poteri

By studying the ways in which Italian elites participated in the administrative, political, military, and religious management of the Spanish Monarchy, this book highlights the various degrees and forms of their contribution to Spanish hegemony. The study contributes to current debates on the territorial configurations of a global empire such as the Spanish one, connecting the services rendered to the Crown, the forms of mobility associated with them, and the acquisition of signs of social distinction. The approach adopted combines a prosopographical perspective —based on the analysis of the careers of members of various bodies at the service of the Monarchy (ecclesiastics, magistrates, financiers, military entrepreneurs) and of the recipients of the Monarchy’s primary honors (Order of the Golden Fleece, Grandees of Spain, Castilian military orders)— with the analysis of individual and family paths. It also aims to offer a better understanding of the socio-political hierarchies and the foundations of Spanish hegemony in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Italy.
