PhD in American History from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1989) and scientific researcher at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cient\u00edficas (1999), assigned to the Escuela de Estudios Hispano-Americanos, of which he has been director for two periods. He completed his training at the Instituto de Investigaciones Hist\u00f3rica (UNAM) and at Southern Methodist University (Dallas). He was awarded the Conacyt Chair at the Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Zacatecas. He specialises in European Expansion in America and the Pacific, as well as in the construction of Spanish Americanism (19th-20th centuries). In addition to the reference book La aventura de lo imposible. Expediciones mar\u00edtimas espa\u00f1olas<\/em> (Madrid, Museo Naval, 2000), it is worth mentioning Poblar la inmensidad. Sociedades, conflictividad y representaci\u00f3n en los m\u00e1rgenes del Imperio Hisp\u00e1nico (siglos XV-XIX)<\/em> (Madrid, Ediciones Rubeo-CSIC, 2010); La Nao de China, 1565-1815. Navegaci\u00f3n, comercio e intercambios culturales<\/em> (Seville, University of Seville, 2014), Un oc\u00e9ano de seda y plata: el universo econ\u00f3mico del Gale\u00f3n de Manila<\/em> (Madrid, CSIC, 2013), in collaboration with Carlos Mart\u00ednez Shaw, and Conocer el Pac\u00edfico.<\/em> Exploraciones, im\u00e1genes y formaci\u00f3n de sociedades oce\u00e1nicas<\/em> (Seville, Editorial Universidad de Sevilla, 2015), coordinated with Carmen Mena and Emilio Jos\u00e9 Luque Azcona.
