This volume addresses one of the most debated topics in the historiography of the Hispanic Monarchy in the Early Modern period: its political nature. It examines the most interesting aspects of the Hispanic polycentric model, which presents the Monarchy as a political entity composed of several interconnected units that interacted not only with the king but also with each other. These connections contributed to the shaping of court politics and the generation of new forms of collaboration, competition, and negotiation. The analysis of four case studies, featuring individuals, families, and power groups that managed to operate within or outside institutional channels, between the Italian and Iberian territories of the Monarchy, allows us to interpret this political entity as something more than the simple juxtaposition of kingdoms under a single king. The result was a state capable of strengthening itself through the interactions that occurred between the local and global spheres thanks to the presence of an articulated system of networks.<\/p>

This book analyzes some branches of the Serra family network, a Genoese family that acquired a unique role as intermediaries between the Ligurian Republic and the Spanish Monarchy, especially from the late 16th century until the reign of Philip IV. To achieve this, the Serras cultivated a complex network of relatives, associates, and correspondents that encompassed key locations for Spanish logistics, as well as various areas of investment and services that were highly dependent on the international and local context, the family’s circumstances, and the specific interests of the individuals and the different branches to which they belonged. This work combines micro- and macro-historical perspectives across its various themes: from the study of the family’s origins and the construction of its transnational network, through the prominent role played by its various services to the Hispanic Monarchy (primarily finance, debt, galley and military contracts), to the analysis of investment strategies, status displays, and cultural expressions that defined the family’s identity in the regions where it operated. Through the exhaustive analysis of numerous Italian and Spanish sources and a multidisciplinary approach, the case study presents a transnational elite that highlights the polycentric nature of the states of the Ancien R\u00e9gime, as well as the connections between monarchical and republican formations in the Early Modern period, both heavily reliant on the economic, cultural, and political services provided by Genoese individuals.<\/p>
