Alfonso J. Hern\u00e1ndez Rodr\u00edguez graduated in Geography and History from the Universidad de La Rioja (2016), where he had an introductory research scholarship from 2015 to 2016. He holds a Master’s Degree in American Studies (2017) and Advanced Historical Studies, specializing in Early Modern History (2018), both from the Universidad de Sevilla. In 2023, he completed his studies within the framework of the Official Doctorate Program in History at the Universidad de Sevilla, defending his thesis, which obtained the highest possible grade with cum laude<\/em> honors.<\/p>

From 2019 to 2023, he was hired as a pre-doctoral FPI researcher, becoming part of the staff of the Department of Early Modern History at the Universidad de Sevilla as well as working as a professor. To date, he has been part of the teams of various research projects funded by the Spanish government. In addition, he has completed several pre-doctoral and post-doctoral research stays at the Investigaciones Dr. Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Luis Mora de la Ciudad de M\u00e9xico and participated in a number of national and international conferences and seminars. His main lines of research are the political, institutional, commercial, and, above all, military history of the Carrera de Indias in the 17th century. However, in recent years he has become interested in other phenomena that are crucial to understanding the polycentric nature of the monarchy: inter-American trade between New Spain and Peru in the late 17th and early 18th centuries through the personal accounts of businessmen; and the defensive and manufacturing capabilities of viceregal Mexico through the production and distribution of such an indispensable commodity as gunpowder.<\/p>

In recent years, he has published some of the results of his research in journals such as Gladius, Magall\u00e1nica, Studia Historica: Historia Moderna, Anuario de Estudios Americanos, Revista Complutense de Historia de Am\u00e9rica<\/em>, and Tiempos Modernos<\/em>.<\/p>

His first book, Soldados de la Carrera de Indias. Estructuras militares y conexiones atl\u00e1nticas de la Monarqu\u00eda Cat\u00f3lica en el siglo XVII<\/em>, the result of his doctoral thesis, dissects the military structure of the Indian fleets based on unpublished documentation from different archives and dialogue with the most recent methodological and interpretative paradigms related to war, the military profession, and the construction of the modern state.<\/p>
