In his dissertation, A Politics of Community: Identity, Stigma and Meaning in the Extra-Parliamentary Left, he investigated how individuals create, join, and maintain a radical leftist movement, demonstrating that understanding even radical forms of political action requires a focus on the mundane and habitual activities of political groups. His research interests include community, radicalization, identity, political sociology, and stigmatization.
