About our project
UNWANTED is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action lead by historian Deborah Besseghini that with the project’s network SIDE examines the unforeseen outcomes of great power interventions. Deborah explores how trans-imperial agents in Latin America provided critical resources that funded Britain’s global fight against Napoleon, helped liberate Spain and other territories from French occupation, and contributed to reshape Britain’s economic and political position. Ultimately, such initiatives fostered revolutionary changes in Europe's imperial systems.
HIGHLIGHTED ARTICLE
El teórico, el artista y las flores de papel

Las raíces post-imperiales del “imperio informal” y la controversia de Platt con Robinson y Gallagher sobre América Latina (1953-1989)

Informal empire has returned to historiography with new strength, although it had never completely disappeared. This article explains Robinson and Gallagher’s proposal and the objections it aroused, particularly on the part of D. C. M. Platt. Actually, there were two successive debates. Robinson and Gallagher responded to the end of the British Empire and the rise of US hegemony; Platt to revolutionary Latin America and the “dependency” discourse: phases and theatres of the Cold War.

Testimonials and Press
WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT OUR WORK
"Between the XVIII and XIX centuries the world went through a period of profound changes, marked by the debilitation of the great empires and the transformation of the forms of economic and political organization [...] Deborah Besseghini explaines that these processes must be understood within the context of the so-called Age of Revolutions, a key period for the transformation of imperial systems and economic global dynamics."
"Deborah, a passionate researcher, with her path demonstrates that commitment to study and research opens boundless horizons and that even from the Alpine valleys one can contribute to international knowledge and culture. Examples like Deborah’s can become a beacon for young people, an invitation to believe in their abilities and to courageously pursue their dreams."

Deborah Besseghini’s project promises to make a significant contribution to the political history of the Napoleonic era. Her research has the potential to illuminate the close entanglement between fiscal resources, imperial governance, and geopolitical transformation. More broadly, the project offers an original perspective on the political consequences of wartime, the dynamics of imperial breakdown, and the relations between Europe and the Hispanic world.
