Deborah explores how trans-imperial agents in Latin America provided critical resources that funded Britain\u2019s global fight against Napoleon, helped liberate Spain and other territories from French occupation, and contributed to reshape Britain\u2019s economic and political position. This article explains Robinson and Gallagher\u2019s proposal and the objections it aroused, particularly on the part of D. C. M. Platt. Actually, there were two successive debates. Robinson and Gallagher responded to the end of the British Empire and the rise of US hegemony; Platt to revolutionary Latin America and the \u201cdependency\u201d discourse: phases and theatres of the
