Manuel R. Torres is Senior Lecturer in Political Science at the Pablo de Olavide University of Seville (Spain). He was Research Fellow in the Department of Political Science at the University of Granada, Visiting Fellow at Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace in Stanford University (California), International Center for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR) at King's College of London, Centre for International Studies (CIS) at London School of Economics and Political Science, Visiting Scholar at Weatherhead Center in Harvard University, and Visiting Research Associate at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Johns Hopkins University (Washington, D.C.)
He is Ph.D. in Political Science by the University of Granada (Spain). His doctoral thesis entitled The propagandist dimension of the global jihad terrorism was unanimously qualified as Excellent cum laude. He has a Master degree in Human Resources by the Professional College of Political Science and Sociology of Madrid.
He is the author of the book: The Echo of Terror. Ideology and Propaganda in Jihadist Terrorism (in Spanish), and numerous works published in books and international journals like: International Journal of Intelligence and Counterintelligence, Journal of Terrorism and Political Violence, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, Mediterranean Politics, etc.
His research topics are political violence, political communication, defense and terrorism. He has been member of the research project “Communicative Action and political communication in the terrorist phenomenon. Strategies to reduce supports to the violent ones ", financed by the University Institute "General Gutierrez Mellado" (UNED), and member of the project “Political Observatory Spain-Magreb: Political liberalization and Migrations” financed by the Ministry of Science and Technology (Spain), and consultant in the project "De-radicalisation and Disengagement in Prisons - Lessons from 15 Countries" (ICSR-King's College of London)
He has received several prizes in recognition of his academic and investigative yield: Extraordinary Award in Political Science Studies (University of Granada), First National Award in the degree of Political Sciences (Ministry of Education - Spanish Government), Research Award by the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology (University of Granada); Prize "Francisco Moreno" (2005) to the best article published in the official journal of the Spanish Navy and the Prize “Revista Ejército 2007” to the best article published in the official journal of the Spanish Army, and National Prize ”Defensa 2008” (Ministry of Defense) to the best investigation for his doctoral thesis.
