Ben Bernanke, an economist between two great depressions.
Keywords:
Great Depression, Great Recession, Federal Reserve, financial crisisAbstract
Ben Bernanke has been awarded, along with Douglas W. Diamond and Philip H. Dybvig, the 2022 Nobel Prize in Economics. Few academic economists have been able to apply their research to economic policy like Bernanke. His most relevant scientific contributions have been related to the Great Depression of the 1930s, especially with the aggravating effects of the banking crisis and the Federal Reserve's failure to behave effectively as a lender of last resort. On the other hand, as president of the Federal Reserve, Bernanke has faced the second most important financial crisis of capitalism, trying not to repeat the mistakes that, in his opinion, this institution made eight decades before.
