It was created in 1983 after the reorganisation of the National Institute of Scientific and Technical Research. It became an independent body in 1989. The centre’s targets include the promotion of bio-industrial research, which involves the development and implementation of technical advances in the field, the training of technicians and researchers, especially in the field of bio-technology, and the creation of research and development cooperation links with first world and developing countries.
