History
The RIID-LSS begun with the CEPACC (TSI2005-24767-E/ Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia) network. This network, coordinated by Prof. Pilar Orero of the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona since 2005, is a theme network of universities and private partners for the research, dissemination and promotion of universial access to communication, information and information technologies.
It included members of research groups from the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, Institut Universitari d'Estudis Europeus, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos de Madrid, Universidad Carlos III, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Universidad de Deusto, Universidad de Granada y la Universidad de Vigo.
In the 2nd Meeting of the CEPACC Science-Business network in Barcelona on the 21st of April 2006, participants agreed on the need for a research network specifically targeting sign languages due to their specificity in universal access and the need to promote their normalization. This marks the moment of birth of RIDD-LSS.
