Populations are aging at an alarming rate in many regions such as most European countries and Japan. Consequently, there is an increase in the number of people living alone. This will lead to an increased demand for elderly care, posing severe impediments to deliver high-quality health and social care. Providing means for the elderly to maintain a healthy socially rich and independent life is a strategic societal and economic goal to mitigate the problems of the ageing population.
