Abstract

This study explores the expression of evidentiality in Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) spoken in Turkey, focusing on its interaction with Turkish due to prolonged linguistic contact. Through a corpus of 30 surveys conducted with bilingual speakers of Ladino and Turkish, the research investigates the strategies used for evidential marking, comparing Ladino’s lexical structures with Turkish morphological patterns. The findings suggest that while Ladino retains its core grammatical forms, the pluperfect appears to exhibit a subtle semantic influence from the Turkish evidential suffix [-mIş]. Nonetheless, this influence is not sufficient to indicate the grammaticalization of an evidential system in Ladino, as its usage remains consistent with standard Spanish conventions. The study concludes that Ladino incorporates functional aspects of Turkish evidentiality without undergoing significant grammatical shifts, reflecting a semantic adaptation rather than a structural convergence between the two languages.
