Abstract

The British Suffrage Movement, which represents a milestone in the political struggle for women’s rights, was also a cultural phenomenon in which art and creativity played a central role. This article analyses the intersection between art, activism and politics through a description of the artists’ associations that were created with the aim of supporting the demand for women’s suffrage. Organisations such as the Artist Suffrage League (ASL) ans the Suffrage Atelier produced visual material that helped to strengthen the movement’s identity, attract media attention and make its cause visible to society.

The research is based on the analysis of historical documents, visual materials and secondary sources, which provide an account of the diversity of artistic strategies and graphic resources used by the suffragettes in their political campaign. It also highlights the contribution of key figures such as Mary Lowndes and Sylvia Pankhurst.

The results reveal that the suffragist art played a fundamental role in the cohesion of the movement, providing a visual language and a collective imaginary through symbols such as the purple, white and green colours; and iconic figures such as the goddess Athena or the angel with a trumpet designed by Sylvia Pankhurst. It also shows how these artistic workshops were not only dedicated to the production of political propaganda but also worked as spaces for social change.
