Abstract

The history of the Spanish II Republic can not be understood
without studying the whole pack of reforms that the army experimented
since 1931, where it is fundamental to stand out the role displayed by
Manuel Azaña. These reforms, developed along the short republican
period meant the opposition of the army; however, it is necessary to make
a question to ourselves: Besides the political fact, were they necessary in
order to modernize the Spanish army?
