III International Conference “Ireland and the Iberian Atlantic”
The first two editions of the International Conference “Ireland and the Iberian Atlantic”, held in Seville in 2008 and 2016, brought together researchers interested in the historical relations between Ireland and the Iberian worlds. Their findings were published in Irlanda y el Atlántico Ibérico. Movilidad, participación e intercambio cultural (1580–1823) (Albatros Ediciones, 2010) and Ireland and the Iberian Atlantic: Migration, Military and Material Culture (Albatros Ediciones, 2020), which examined Irish mobility and participation across the territories of the Iberian monarchies from social, political, military and cultural perspectives.
In the years since the last meeting, new research has opened up further possibilities for studying these connections. The introduction of new themes, sources and methodologies invites us to reassess existing interpretations and ask questions that can deepen our understanding of the relations between Ireland and the Iberian worlds, including their reach beyond the Atlantic.
With this aim, we are convening the third edition of the conference, to be held at Pablo de Olavide University in Seville on 8, 9 and 10 March 2028. The meeting will provide a forum for sharing recent findings, discussing research in progress and developing new lines of inquiry. We hope to encourage dialogue between established scholars and early-career researchers, as well as exchanges across historiographical traditions and disciplines.
We invite the academic community and all those interested in the historical relations between Ireland and the Iberian worlds to participate in this third edition of the conference. Both proposal submissions and attendance will be open to people with or without an institutional affiliation. We particularly welcome proposals that address underexplored themes, introduce new sources or offer methodological approaches that can advance this field of study. Submission guidelines and deadlines will be circulated in a forthcoming announcement.
