The overrepresentation of Afro-Ecuadorians from the Chota Valley in Ecuadorian soccer responds to the historical racial construction of the population as apt for sports and bodily activities; and as less intelligent and therefore, denied opportunities in spaces considered white. However, soccer, as a natural space for Afro-Ecuadorians, does not respond to the population's expectations of economic mobility; rather, it can be considered an artifact of widening inequality gaps.
