Author Biographies

Magdalena Illán Martín, Universidad de Sevilla, España

Magdalena Illán Martín is Professor of Art History at the University of Seville, where she is Director of the Department of Art History. Her research has focused on two areas of study: on the one hand, the analysis of Spanish and Latin American artists and art theorists active in Spain and France in the 19th and early 20th centuries and, on the other, the examination of visual discourses on representations of women in the arts. Both lines of research have generated publications on the construction of hegemonic and counter-hegemonic feminine iconographies and on the participation of women creators, critics and promoters, such as “Mexican artists in fin-de-siècle Paris. Towards the visibility of female creative talent” (Art, identity and visual culture of the 19th century in Mexico, 2023) or “Medals, honors and fame. “Ibero-American Women Artists in the French Salons (1852-1914)” (International Congress on Collecting, Patronage and the Art Market: European, American and Asian Areas, 2018).

Carmen Rodríguez Serrano, Universidad de Sevilla, España

Doctor in Art History from the University of Seville, where she began her career as a Research Fellow, writing the thesis The painter José Arpa Perea and the renewal of Sevillian painting of his time, which obtained an Extraordinary Doctorate Award. She develops her research work within the Art Laboratory group (HUM-210) and has participated and is also participating in various national and regional projects such as “Female agency in the Andalusian artistic scene (1440-1940)”, among others. Her research addresses the field of painting from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the artistic links between Europe and America, as well as the presence of women in the artistic panorama of that period. She is a career official of the Junta de Andalucía (PES), on leave and, currently, a Doctoral Assistant Professor of the Department of Art History of the University of Seville, accredited as a Permanent Labor Professor.
