Abstract

As an important part of collective identity, “playing ball” has been, and is, one of the most important socialization activities in Uruguay. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, Belloni’s nativist sculpture will turn into an extremely valuable means to unwind the representative iconography of this “national sport”, as much as inside and outside borders. The Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol, together with Club Atlético Peñarol, will be the foremost requesters of his work, ranging from the manufacturing of trophies and medals to the presents for occasional foreign opponents. This way, football and sculpture become one, representing, in their own unique way, Uruguayans’ heartfelt identity.
