Abstract

This article studies the attempts by the academic and politician Diego Rejon de Silva to define and maintain the existence of a Spanish School of painting in his book La Pintura (1786). His words are essential to analyse how the concept of Spanish School that remains to these days was first established, as well as providing a useful source to study the development of the discourse on its excellence in the context of the ideas in the Age of Enlightenment. La Pintura provides valuable material to understand how nationalistic values in painting were approached and defined, at a time of abundant eulogistic texts on Hispanic culture. Its publication shows an effort to generate and promote a feeling of national pride within the realm of painting, and reveals the connections between Art and power.
