Abstract

The Devil was ever present in our forefathers’ lives. No doubts were cast on its existence. At the Siglo de Oro, men and women were allured and scared by the evil figure. In art and literature and even more so in painting and drama, it was a very inspirational theme. A particular iconography of the devil was carved in these fine arts: in comedy being a burlesque figure and orthodox and canonical in painting.
