Abstract

The examination of documents held in Colombian archives has revealed the names of fourteen painters who worked in the New Kingdom of Granada and were previously unknown. At the same time, the study provides information on apprenticeship contracts, works they carried out, the years and cities in which their activity is documented, and the individuals with whom they interacted, as well as records of sales and property purchases that offer insight into their economic standing. Previously unpublished documentation concerning painters already known within the New Kingdom of Granada has also come to light, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of the professional profiles of these masters and their craft during the viceregal period. The earliest record dates from 1559 and the latest from 1785, in the cities of Santiago de Cali, Santafé, Santiago de Tunja, Cartago, San Juan de Pasto, and Popayán.
