Abstract

The following text authored by Hélène Jannière is part of a compilation of essays and analyses which included several recognized authors (worth mentioning J. Posener, P. Vago, P. Collins, M. Ragon and J.M. Montaner): these experts were involved in important debates since the 20th century dealing with different aspects of architectural criticism including nature, the language used, the autonomy of the critique and the barriers or boundaries of these analyses. Jannière investigates the challenges that during the second half of the previous century helped architectural criticism to become a research subject while still facing issues with its definition as a new discipline and also with determining the boundariesto practice it. Using the works of Croce, Ugo, Zevi and Tafuri, the author highlights the difficulties (problems, challenges) inherent to the establishment of a typology for the architectural criticism as well as the conflict that this has caused in relation to the language and the instruments used in architecture.
